63. Framework for Educational Technology Laboratory Sessions


            [Kerala University English Teacher Educator’s Forum - KUETEF]

The following  is the extract from  the   proposal   I had  prepared as directed by the  Chairman of the Board of Studies in Education (UG), University of Kerala. The proposed framework was submitted for  discussion and approval by  the esteemed participants  of   the  Conceptualization Workshop organized in connection with the  Reification/Redesigning of the  B. Ed Curriculum at the   Senate Chamber, University of Kerala on 22 and 23 February 2013. 

Introduction
The Technology Lab  promotes  the enhancement of knowledge and the use of technology resources. Trainees  learn how to integrate the tools of technology in all phases of their teaching. Used properly it can serve as a test bed for new  technology applications in  education.

Objectives of Technology Lab sessions. The sessions  are planned for  the trainee to:
1.     Familiarize with different technological aids.
2.     Develop the ability to use aids for teaching.
3.     Sensitize  aspects related to the appropriate and effective use of various aids.

Type of Lab Proposed:
* Equipped with visual aids that do not require power supply and with   audio, visual and  audio-visual aids  that require power supply. 

Lab requirements:
* Well  ventilated room with  facility for  darkening of room.
* Provision for uninterrupted  power supply.
* Portable screen  and walls suitable for screening.
* Multiple Plug Points with extension cords for connecting equipments.
* Large tables for students to work in groups and  operate/ prepare aids.
* Demonstration table for instructor. 

Technological Aids required:
*Black board, White Board, Charts, Flannel Board, Flip Charts, Radio, Public Address System, Audio Player, Video CD Player, DVD Player, i-Pod, Multimedia PC, i-Pad, Digital Camera, Handicam, LCD Projectors with screen, LCD TV and  Smart Board. 

Teaching-Learning Resources required :
* A collection of  audio, visual, audio-visual and  Multimedia  materials. 

Total  Lab sessions :
* 10 hours per trainee
Ø 03 hours for instruction of  different ways of   using technological aids.
Ø 02 hours for preparation of cost effective and inexpensive aids in a Workshop mode.
Ø 05 hours for preparation and presentation of technological   teaching –learning aids   related to ones Optional Subject by each trainee.

Topics for Lab sessions :
* Old  aids and modern technological  aids.
* Illustration of use of  aids  from the library  to show how to use and how not to use aids  to ensure effective learning.

Proposed Strategy :
1. Demonstration  by instructor of working and use of  specific
     technological aids. 
2. Sensitizing  students on how to use and how  not to use  different aids.
3. Providing  tips for  using aids for  presentation of topics.
4. Hands-on experience  for  each trainee for operating the technological aid .
5. On completion of demonstration of all available  aids in the Lab, each
        trainee is  assigned the task of  preparing  a teaching-learning material
         which  is to  be presented before peers.
6. Optional-wise Group work for production of a Documentary Film / Video
        for teaching   a  content  at the secondary level.

Assessment :
* Marks are to be awarded for   knowledge of  use of various aids  and for
       the preparation  and presentation of the teaching-learning  material.

62. Framework for Computer Laboratory Sessions

The proposed framework was submitted for  discussion and approval by  the esteemed participants  of   the  Conceptualization Workshop organized in connection with the  Reification/Redesigning of the  B. What's the point of running a university computer lab when all the students bring laptops anyway? That's a question that schools have been asking themselves…the university's explanatory document notes, "... students need collaborative space where they can bring their laptops and mobile devices to conduct group work, especially as the curriculum becomes increasingly team- and project-based."

Objectives of Computer Lab sessions : The sessions are  planned for the trainee to:                                                                                          
1.     Familiarize with the use of Computer and the Internet.
2.     Develop the ability to use the Computer and the Web resources for teaching.
3.     Sensitize aspects related to the appropriate and effective use of the Computer and Web resources.
Type of Lab Proposed :  Computer Lab with Internet facility
Lab infrastructure :
 * A dust-proof room preferably with Air Condition facility.
 * Net-worked Multimedia PC’s.
 * Seating facility with one PC per student capable of  unobstructed view of
         instructor.
 * Teacher PC and seat  placed on a raised platform.
 * LCD projector with  screen/ LCD TV, White Board, Cell Phone, Laptop  and
      Tablet   for demonstration.          
* Library of  teaching-learning CD/DVD  and e-resources for free access by
       trainees.     

Total  Lab sessions       : 15 hours per trainee
Ø 02 hours for instruction of  different ways of  using  the computer for  teaching  and learning.
Ø 02 hours  for providing instruction on ways  of using the Internet for teaching and learning.
Ø 04 hours for trainees to practice  the use of  computer for preparation of Word Documents, Excel files and  PowerPoint slides employing  animated gifs, visuals, audio and video files,  use of  Flash for  creating animation and  Video editing techniques.
Ø 04 hours  for  surfing  the Internet and  conducting   Web site Survey.
Ø 03 hours to prepare a multimedia teaching- learning material.

Topics for Lab sessions :
* Introduction / demonstration of :
1. Computer-based Learning 2. Computer Assisted Learning
 3. Blended Learning  4. Social Networking 5. Learning Management System.
*  Demonstration of various  tools for teaching and learning:
- Presentation software, Microsoft Office, Linux, Movie Maker software
    such as  Studio 9, Free resources like Hot Potatoes other useful digital
    resources and Web-based resources.
* Demonstration of Video Conferencing, Podcasting and Webcasting.

Proposed Strategy:                
1. Demonstration of use of computer and ways of  accessing  free Internet resources.                                                   
2. Hands-on experience of  using PC.
3. On completion of demonstration  and hands-on  experience, each trainee is assigned the task of preparing a teaching-learning material.

Assessment :  Marks are to be awarded for :
1. Knowledge of using  digital resources.
2. Skill of producing  appropriate teaching-learning material.
3. Group work for preparation of an e-resource.

The proposed framework was submitted for  discussion and approval by  the esteemed participants  of   the  Conceptualization Workshop organized in connection with the  Reification/Redesigning of the  B. Introduction to Language Lab

The rationale for language lab use in teaching pronunciation is evident; although students have no external feedback if working on their own, the use of the lab promotes autonomy in our students as they learn to monitor their own errors...

Advanced   Multimedia  Language Labs  have several  uses. These include:
* Capability to have concurrent work with large groups of students.
*Maximized time on task for each student.
* Interaction/information exchange.
* Independent individualized work and group/pair work.
* Opportunity to  incorporate authentic  video and Internet materials into  language study.
* Activities including brainstorming, schema building, prediction, information gap, problem solving, word/body language association, and spontaneous verbal and non-verbal communication.

Objectives of Language Lab sessions: The sessions  are planned for the trainee to :
1.     Familiarize  with the sounds of the language.
2.     Develop the ability to  use  the language with proper stress, rhythm and intonation.
3.     Sensitize aspects related to  use of language in varied contexts.
Type of Lab Proposed           : Digital
Type of  arrangement            : Student Consoles & Teacher Console
Additional Requirements:
* Library of Listening/viewing materials including BBC,IELTS and TOEFL tests.                                              
Total  Lab sessions  :
A. 10 hours  compulsory for each trainee.
B. 10 hours  voluntarily- The sessions  are given both during the first and second semester.

Topics for Lab sessions:
* Sounds of English  * Accent, Rhythm and Intonation * Dialogues  in English
* Videos  that illustrate use of English in  everyday situations and in professional life
* Comprehension exercises
Proposed Strategy:
 1.Guided mode with teacher assistance.
 2.Free-to-roam mode-for trainees who require less drills may move on to complex  listening-cum-viewing  tasks.
Assessment:
* Marks are to be awarded for attendance of Lab sessions  and for a Listening Test  to be given at the end of the Course.
