138.Action research in ELT

 

Action research is a development tool for a teacher that involves observing or gathering other data about a class through interviews, case studies, and questionnaires. A teacher can establish a cycle of identifying problems, planning changes in response, implementing changes and gathering and analysing data to evaluate the implementation. Action research can be used to help general development or to resolve specific problems with teaching or learners.

 

Example
A teacher has problems with giving feedback to learners on speaking problems and decides to record their classes. They then analyse the recordings to identify more effective ways of correction. They implement changes based on this, and collect data to analyse whether feedback is now more useful to learners.

 

In the classroom
Peer observations, learner and teacher diaries, audio and video recordings, case studies, questionnaires and interviews with learners are all methods that can be used to gather data for action research.

*Nowadays, more and more research and discussions have focused on the issues of “World Englishes” and English as a Lingua Franca (ELF).

*Recognizing translanguaging in the teaching and learning process.

*Today’s ELT research trends have been changing from mainly on linguistic and language foci to fostering a sense of social responsibility in students in the global world.

 

*The 21st century is referred as the “Postmethods Era” by many scholars in  which the focus on teaching is on eclecticism.

 

* The  increased focus on Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), English Medium Instruction (EMI), and English for Specific Purposes (ESP) has meant that more and more programs require English teachers to use cross-curricular, cross-disciplinary content in teaching and to teach both the content and English.

Some scholars have introduced a new way of looking at second language acquisition (SLA) as “multi-competence” focus on the importance of intercultural communicative competence.

Recent studies on World Englishes, ELF, Translanguaging, as well as the roles of nonnative-English-speaking teachers (NNESTs) in the ELT field, have made more people recognize that the effectiveness of English teachers should be determined by their linguistic, instructional, and intercultural competence rather than simply by their linguistic identity.

*Artificial Intelligence, Xtended Reality (Virtual, Augmented, Mixed Realities), Blended Learning, Gamification, Digital Stories, Mobile Apps, Internet, YouTube, Web.2.0, e-books, and various automations, have changed how we prepare our lessons and instruct our students.

*The constant development of trends and practices in the ELT context has also evolved the role of today’s teacher. More and more teachers are asked to use collaborative, content-based, project-based curriculum to help students develop higher-order thinking skills, effective communication skills, and knowledge of technology.

 

*In general, ELT research has been evolving throughout time due to dynamic changes in the area. Some prominent changes include purposes of learning, more centered focus on students, soft skills and character, and technological development.

135.Reviving Blog

 

By the time the two semester  BEd  Programme  was launched, I was transferred to   Thalassery  and was posted in the MEd department. So even  though  I had  associated myself  with the  revision of the curriculum in Kerala University, I  never  got to know  how  exactly  the  curriculum was  transacted.  Following the transfer, I  launched  new  Blogs for the MEd students  and  discontinued  posting  in this Blog.

Since  May 2022, I  was  invited  to  engage  sessions  for  the  BEd  trainees  of   Christ Nagar  College of Education, Trivandrum.  Then  I used to  refer to this  Blog  to enable my trainees  access  content related  materials.  The  trainees of the 2021-23 batch  prior  to their  Model examination informed  that  they have not been able to  access  notes on  certain   topics. So  I had  prepared  materials.  I hope the materials  posted  in the  following  posts,   would benefit  trainees in other colleges  too…

The following is a brief  summary of the topics prescribed for study under Unit 4 of EDU 0.13. A presentation of the same was made during the Academic Meeting of KUETEF held at Govt. CTE,Thiruvananthapuram on 11 August 2016.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. It refers to the process of tracking and documenting the skills, knowledge and experience that you gain both formally and informally as you work, beyond any initial training. It's a record of what you experience, learn and then apply. The CPD process helps you manage your own development on an ongoing basis.

Reflecting on own teaching

As professionals we care about our students and the quality of the lessons we prepare and deliver.

Reflecting on what you do in the class can reveal plenty about you as a teacher – your attitude to your work and your students, your role in the classroom, your management techniques, your lesson planning abilities…

Rubrics as assessment tool

Rubrics are a valuable tool for self-assessment. Rubrics not only list the success criteria but also provide descriptions of levels of performance, students are able to use them to monitor and evaluate their progress during an assessment task or activity.

Teacher Performance Standards

Teaching standards describe what teachers should know and be able to do in today’s learning context to ensure students attain these learning goals, as well as encourage teachers to build literacy and thinking skills across the curriculum, and help students address multiple perspectives in exploring ideas and solving problems.

Ideally teaching standards  should include a focus on 21st century knowledge and skills; personalized learning for diverse learners; a collaborative professional culture; improved assessment literacy; and new leadership role for teachers and administrators.

Total Quality Management (TQM)

TQM is a   management system for a customer-focused organization that involves all employees in continual improvement. It uses strategy, data, and effective communications to integrate the quality discipline into the culture and activities of the organization.

In English Language Teaching, TQM is perceived as a systematic approach to achieve appropriate level of quality and meet students’ needs and requirements. In short TQM is a both a mind-set and a set of practical activities being able to promote continuous improvement.

132. Unit 3: EDU 0.13

Brihaspati e-learning platform

It is a Learning Management System launched by  IIT Kanpur . They build e-Learning courses and deliver them across wide area networks.

e-content

It encompasses eTexts and digital learning resources.These could be digital textbooks, workbooks, articles, videos, or multimedia. Switching from traditional textbooks to digital course materials is a growing trend in higher education. Advantages for students and faculty include greater interactivity, customizability, and opportunities for social collaboration. (Electronic-content) Digital content that can be transmitted over a computer network such as the Internet. 

e-content  design and development

The AADDIE  (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) Model is a popular model for design and development of e-content.  The material developed could in  Textual format  and may include Graphical Content, Audio/Video Content and also Animated Content.

e-PG Pathshala

The Ministry of Human Resource Development in India under its National Mission on Education through ICT (NME-ICT), has assigned work to the University Grants Commission (UGC) for development of e-content in 77 subjects at  the Post Graduate level. The content and its quality is the key component of this education system.

NMEICT

It stands for National Mission on Education through ICT (NMEICT) and is  funded by the Ministry of Human Resources Development. "Train 10 thousand teachers" is a major initiative under the NMEICT, in which IIT Kharagpur and IIT Bombay are working as partner institutes to improve the teaching skills of engineering college teachers of the country in core Engineering and Science subjects.

Reusable Learning Objects (RLO)

Reusable Learning Objects (RLOs) are based on a new way of thinking about learning and provide a digital educational resource that can be reused, scaled and shared from a central online repository in the support of instruction and learning. Each RLO supports a single learning objective. They vary in size, scope and level of granularity ranging from small chunks of instruction to a series of combined resources to provide a more complex learning experience.
