[Kerala University English Teacher
Educator’s Forum - KUETEF]
During
the Conceptualization meeting of the BEd curriculum of the University of Kerala
held on 22 and 23 Feb 2013, groups were
formed to finalize the framework of the course. Group # 3 which comprised Mr.
K.Y.Benedict, Mr.C.Praveen (CTE,Tvpm), Mr.Praveen (SNTC,Varkala), Mr.Suneeth
Ben, Ms.Beena, Ms.Lakshmi and Ms.Anila Chacko arrived at the following
consensus.
Course Structure:
·
The two
Semester pattern is to be maintained but should include a compulsory Internship
of three month duration attached to a school in the State, following any
stream (SCERT, CBSE or ICSE). At the end of
the Internship a
Performance-based evidence should be submitted duly certified by the
Headmaster/Headmistress of the school from which Internship was done. However
those trainees who were already in Service and were teaching in a school at
the time of joining the BEd programme,
can be exempted from Internship.
Course Timings:
·
First
Semester should be from 01 November to
31March.
·
The First
Semester examination and valuation to be completed in April.
·
The Second
Semester examination should be from 01
May to 30 September.
·
The Second
Semester examination and valuation to be
completed in October.
The members raised concern about the absence of vacation
for the faculty. This many opined is
essential, as many
teacher educators are over worked and
are heavily stressed. A vacation rejuvenates the teacher and
helps him/her to make creative contributions!
Total Number of Papers
· There should
not be any change in the number of Papers and should be retained as 5 in
the First and 5 in Second Semester.
·
The questions asked for the Pedagogical Analysis
paper, many felt to be a repetition of
the first semester. Hence it was suggested that instead of too much theory for Paper X, there should be
some creative output and marks should be
included in the Internal Assessment. This could take the form of
creation of learning materials which
lends scope for inter-disciplinary study, nurturing of Multiple Intelligence,
Brain-based learning etc.
Regarding CE
·
CE should be
assessed through One Practicum
and one Action Research or One Project.
Regarding transaction
·
For each
Paper, teacher educators should transact
their respective Papers making use of modern technological resources.
Regarding Psychology Paper:
· Ideally in the
First Semester, aspects related to growth and development should be taught and
in the Second Semester, theories of
learning should be taught.
·
To curb the
current practice of appointing
teachers with a background in MA
Psychology for the General Education posts, the
title of the paper should have a mention of Educational Psychology.

Prior to the meeting of the members of the Core Committee
scheduled for 08 March 2013, as directed
by the Convenor of the BEd. Curriculum 2013, I had prepared a List of
activities for Assessment for Optional Subjects with a Split-up of marks.
Unlike the
pattern now being followed, I had
proposed the following: A statement showing the monthly-wise activity/ work to be submitted for Internal
Assessment along with the marks assigned for
each. Incidentally, most of the tasks mentioned
is being successfully implemented in the current BEd. curriculum on an
experimental basis since Nov 2009 in the
Department of English, Govt. CTE, Thiruvananthapuram, with a fair degree of
success.
