73. Why not an Orientation Programme in ELT Methodology?

[Kerala University English Teacher Educator’s Forum - KUETEF]

The  following  news item appeared in the Sunday Times of India 29  September  2013

A month ago,  a teacher educator, approached me  inquiring how to   prepare a  Blue Print for a Question Paper  by including the Mental Process. I was a bit taken aback. The  teacher educator had  already supervised two batches of  BEd. trainees and was now teaching the third Batch! It was then that I realized that this teacher educator had undergone a MEd Course  in  a college in the city,  where  the subject of specialization, Language Education is not taught by   teachers with a Language background but by teachers with  a Science background!! The same is true of Malayalam too-a language, much to the pride  of Malayalees was recently granted classical status is also taught by  teachers, not with  a background in Language Education, but with a background in Science Education!

Well, the new DPI  has  taken  the bull by its horn. How  can we expect anyone ever to come down on the Teacher Education system  in the State where for  three long  years  teachers with a Science  or Mathematics background had been  teaching without any intervention, Language Education at the Post Graduate level in Teacher Training Colleges...

So... shouldn’t  we  commence   the  Workshop  with  an Orientation Programme in  ELT Methodology for   the  newly recruited  English  Teacher  Educators?
